Over the last few years the city has grown a mantle of glamour and sophistication and new visitors will be elated by the trendy bars, clubs and restaurants that are part of present day Bangkok.
The pages of Thailand's Tatler are filled with pictures of designers, models and the movers and shakers of modern Thai High Society, the HiSos, who regularly flock to the newest, most sophisticated venues that the city is now famed for; rooftop watering holes and high-class restaurants cutting edge enough to excite even Paris Hilton.
Over the last few years the city has grown a mantle of glamour and sophistication and new visitors will be elated by the trendy bars, clubs and restaurants that are part of present day Bangkok. Sit at the bar and people watch, or bring a party and join in the fun at one of the great places, Tower Club at lebua.
Restaurants and Bars at Tower Club at lebua, Silom Road, Bangkok
There are many who agree that the venues at the Dome at lebua have raised Bangkok's night scene to new heights. Certainly, any one of the rooftop bars are perfect for that glass of vintage wine or champagne on a warm, sultry night. Watch the lights of the city glittering on the waters of the Chao Phraya River below and the flickering lamps of cars winding their way up the main arteries of the city as you sip a signature cocktail and pick out the city's landmarks.
Sky Bar and Sirocco
The bar is 820 feet above Bangkok's streets and is neon-lit and edgy. Tucked away in a corner of the award-winning Sirocco restaurant on the 63rd floor, the Sky Bar is a favorites hang-out for celebrities local and foreign, and the occasional politician glad of the discreet lighting on the roof terrace.
The clientele are mostly media and business types and although it is a bar, the dress code is strictly enforced. So, no trainers or flip-flops, no sleeveless vests to show off the tats and definitely no shorts no matter how city-like they are.
The cocktails are mixed by one of Bangkok's best baristas (he makes a mean Mai Tai) but if it's spirits you really like, then try the quadruple-distilled New Zealand vodka!
Distil is where you'll find the slightly more serious in-crowd. Part Cigar lounge and part restaurant it specializes in fine single malts which are served with a small carafe of genuine Scottish water. There is a cigar terrace for smokers and, of course, they sell the best Cuban cigars here.
One would be forgiven for thinking that because of the exceptional views and the wow factor of being so high above Bangkok that the food might be of secondary importance, but no, the menu is superb and more than holds its own with the stunning views, offering an extensive choice on the a la carte list.
Prices: The restaurant serves Petrussian Tzar Cut Salmon and Petrussian Beluga Caviar as a matter of course, so prices are not overtly displayed. It's a case of "If you have to ask...".
Part of the State Tower complex (see Sky Bar and Distil), Breeze Restaurant and Bar is on the 52nd floor and you approach it via a futuristic glass sky-bridge. As well as the stunning views and the company of beautiful fashionistas, the food (Kobe beef tenderloin, Wasabi Prawns et al) is superb. Alfresco eating doesn't get any better than this.
