It broke the world record for the highest ball drop when it was unveiled in 2013, surpassing the Times Square Ball Drop in New York.
Made in Thailand by a team of 50 engineers and craftsmen who factor altitude, wind gusts and visibility into the construction, the ball weighs in at 1.2 tons, and consists of a steel frame of 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons, covered with a translucent fabric, and combines 2,950 LED lights, and 50 strobe lights. Now in its fifth consecutive year it will be the city’s first and most memorable sight of the new year.
